5 Things To Do These School Holidays in Sydney

Written by Michelle Forster | 28 September 2019 8:06:03 AM

So, you've decided to spend the school holidays at home in Sydney. Now you're looking for things to do for teens and tweens. Preferably kids activities that don't involve a screen!

Being locals, we know that like us, you've probably already visited the standard tourist attractions. And we know, trying to convince an 11 year old to go to a museum is like trying to convince them to go to the dentist.

This is why we have come up with a list of things to do for the more discerning kids! With these activities you can get a thumbs up from your kids, teens and tweens.

1. Rock climbing at Climb Fit

Rock climbing is a fun activity for any age, from mucking about and developing skills to the advanced climb. Climb Fit in St Leonards, has over 160 routes and cater from the beginner to the advanced.

If you are new, they are really friendly and can teach you how to belay. The atmosphere is friendly and casual with minimal pouncing about.

Entry for under 18 is $13 https://www.climbfit.com.au/

Thumbs up from my 13 and 14 year old!

2. Digital Filmmaking Workshop at Olympic Park

Okay, so I know this involves a screen but it got such a resounding thumbs up from my 11 year old, that I had to include it. The workshop offers an introduction into film making, walking away with their very own short film.

3. Mahon Pool at High Tide in Maroubra

Sydney has so many great ocean pools, but the ones at Mahon pool at high tide get some big swells and got a thumbs up from all 3 of my kids. The waves add fun, but being a pool it's much safer than the ocean.

High tide is around 1.25pm in October.

4. Cables Wake Park and Aqua park at Penrith

Okay, so the Wake Park is a bit more pricey at $44 (15 years and under) per child for 1 hour. However, it is totally worth it and is certainly very cool with everyone able to join in the fun (over 10). All basic equipment is provided, just bring boardies/swimmers. Note: You do need to be a confident swimmer. An option to extend the fun is the aqua park and both parks come in a combined pass for $59 for close to 2 hours. There is a great video on the cableswakpark site if you want to check it out.

Thumbs up from all three kids.

5. Apollo 11 exhibition at Powerhouse

This is probably the one museum exhibition that could muster enthusiasm from nearly any kids. With over 200 objects and a virtual reality experience it got the thumbs up from my 11 and 13 year old.
